Ph.D. Students

Kat Hutt

Kat was born and raised in the Florida panhandle. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Florida. Kat has previously researched the surface finishing characteristics for medical stents, and is currently exploring and characterizing an oscillatory magnetic field-assisted finishing technique for complex geometries. In her free time, she enjoys making music, reading, and finding a nice spot to hang a hammock.

 

Dane Ungurait

Dane Ungurait was born and raised in Pembroke Pines, Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida with Honors with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in May 2020 and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in May 2023. He is currently pursuing a PH.D. in Mechanical Engineering. He is working on developing and optimizing systems for biological tissue collection. In his free time, he enjoys watching sports, exercising, cooking, and playing games with friends.

Spencer Schmidt

Spencer Schmidt is a senior mechanical engineering student from Celebration, Florida. His research involves magnetic field assisted finishing of additively manufactured metal components. Spencer’s hobbies include fishing, cooking, and snow skiing.

 

Jaime van der Veken

Jaime is a mechanical engineering master’s student from Brooksville, Florida. Jaime has previous research experience in the design of benchtop bioreactor equipment and is currently developing tools for oscillatory magnetic field-assisted finishing processes. In his free time, he enjoys designing models for 3D printing, playing the guitar, and hanging out with friends..

Joseph Carello

Joseph is from New City, New York. He is currently a junior studying Aerospace Engineering. His research focuses on magnetic field-assisted finishing of additively manufactured metal components with complex geometries. In his free time, Joseph enjoys watching sports, working out, watching movies, and hanging out with friends. 

 

Graham Cope

Graham is from Ocala, Florida, and is a senior studying Mechanical Engineering. Graham’s research investigates the magnetic field-assisted polishing of polycrystalline ceramics for laser applications. In his free time, Graham enjoys playing board games with friends and trivia on the UF Quizbowl team.

 

Thomas Chang

Thomas is from Miramar, Florida, and is currently a senior studying Computer Engineering. His research contributions are in the development of embedded electronics focusing on an aspiration-assisted biopsy needle. His hobbies include drawing, basketball, cooking, and movies.

 

Allyson Galvin

Allyson is from Sarasota, Florida. She is a junior studying Aerospace Engineering. Her research investigates magnetic field-assisted single point incremental forming. She enjoys baking, listening to music, and spending time with her friends and family.

 

Konrad Gilbert

Konrad Gilbert is from Cumming, Georgia. He is currently a senior studying Mechanical Engineering. Konrad’s research focuses on modifying internal surfaces of dairy processing tubes through magnetic field-assisted finishing. In his free time, he enjoys watching sports, specifically baseball and football, and he enjoys playing soccer.

 

Darren Leong

Darren is from Tampa, Florida. He is currently a sophomore studying Electrical Engineering. His research focuses on creating a polishing system of polycrystalline ceramics. He enjoys playing soccer, binging TV shows, and hanging out with friends.

 

Jen Mire

Jen is from Pompano Beach, Florida. She is currently a senior studying Mechanical Engineering. Jen’s research focuses on Ultra-precision Polishing of Polycrystalline Ceramics and harnessing technology to make this process more efficient. In her free time, she does anything outdoors including climbing, caving, hiking, and paddling.

 

Eden Navarrete

Eden is from Orlando, Florida. She is a senior in Mechanical Engineering. Eden’s research contributes to the development of magnetic field-assisted single point incremental forming. In her free time, she enjoys reading, baking, and trying new restaurants.

 

Alina Orozco Vasquez

Alina Orozco Vasquez is from Sarasota, Florida. She is currently a junior in Mechanical Engineering. Alina’s research focuses on analyzing laser damage on fused silica polished by magnetic field-assisted finishing. She enjoys running, thrifting, and experimenting with vegan recipes.
