Building the Evidence for Next-Generation Heat Treatment

ITMP connects fundamental materials science with predictive modeling and industrial-scale research infrastructure to determine where magnetic fields can provide meaningful processing benefits.

The project evaluates how magnetic fields affect phase transformations, diffusion, microstructure, and material performance; develops predictive tools for process design; and tests scalable concepts using induction-coupled thermomagnetic processing. Together, these activities build the technical evidence needed to assess performance, energy, and manufacturing opportunities.

ITMP is building validated scientific understanding, predictive methods, and scalable experimental capabilities—not assuming that every material or process will benefit from an applied magnetic field. The goal is to identify where thermomagnetic processing provides measurable advantages and to define the conditions required for practical adoption.

The resulting knowledge can guide future research investments, industrial demonstrations, process-development partnerships, and assessments of potential energy and resource benefits.
