Sustainable Practices for Landfill Design and Operation
The sustainable materials management group in ESSIE is part of the Environmental Engineering Sciences Department. A combination of field and laboratory activities focus on the applied research needs of the solid waste management community. Undergraduate and graduate student course topics include fundamentals of waste management, landfill design, and beneficial use of waste materials.
In the Fall 2022 semester, Professor Townsend is teaching ENV 2003 Introduction to Environmental Engineering and ENV 3000 Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering. Professor of Practice Laux is instructing a course on Landfill Design (ENV4300/6301). Ongoing research topics include PFAS management and characterization in waste, recycling of waste-to-energy ash, sustainable landfill design and operation, construction and demolition debris management, beneficial use of waste materials and sustainable materials management.
