The sustainable materials management group in ESSIE is part of the Environmental Engineering Sciences Department. A combination of field and laboratory activities focus on the applied research needs of the solid waste management community. Undergraduate and graduate student course topics include fundamentals of waste management, landfill design, and beneficial use of waste materials.
In theĀ summer of 2024 semester, the UF Sustainable Materials Management Research Laboratory (SMMRL) is focusing on a variety of research projects. Topics include PFAS in wastes and landfills, beneficial use of byproducts such as waste-to-energy ash and phosphogypsum, and constructed wetlands for landfill leachate treatment.
