Armed with training from the University of Florida’s college of engineering, Santa Fe College instructors this week will train peers from other state colleges to examine the safety of autonomous systems and strengthen the workforce powering them.
Through the NASA-funded TRANSCEND project, a team of researchers is exploring the safety and trustworthiness of autonomous systems, including airplanes and drones. This month marks the next step, as Santa Fe College instructors take the lead to prepare a workforce in artificial intelligence safety.
Because participants were not required to have any background in AI, the curriculum follows a comprehensive approach, beginning with foundational AI concepts. Then there are hands-on training sessions using AI Hardware Adventure boards, a learning platform known as AHA, developed by the students in UF’s Nelms Institute Internet of Things (IoT) Lab under guidance of Semmoto Endowed Chair Professor Swarup Bhunia, Ph.D., who is leading this initiative with Dr. Sandip Ray.
“AHA is a unique training platform for physical AI that allows students to understand how AI works in the real world,” Bhunia said. “It allows students to collect data from sensors and then run AI algorithms on them to make intelligent decisions, thus gaining hands-on experience on smart systems as well as their safety issues.”
