iMED welcomes Ms. Andrea Camacho-Betancourt into the team as a new PhD student. She completed her bachelor’s in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida. Andrea will be working on the Additive and Hybrid Manufacturing side of the team as well as serve as the Lab Director.

We wish her all the best as she begins this incredible journey!

August 11, 2024, Austin TX – Luke Langan presented iMED Laboratory research in 5-axis hybrid manufacturing at the Annual International Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium in Austin, Texas. This work, a collaboration between iMED Laboratory and AMPrint Center at RIT, sought to unveil challenges with 3D printing stainless steel on non-planar surfaces. Components were fabricated using a state-of-the-art hybrid manufacturing machine in the Brinkman Machine Tools and Manufacturing Laboratory, and applied laser power and scanning speed were found to directly influence metal characteristics. Future work aims to develop hybrid manufacturing to widen its applicability!

January 2024 – We are excited to welcome Dr. Iris Rivero as the new chair of the Industrial and Systems Engineering department at the University of Florida. We look forward to the transition of the iMED lab and continuing research at the University of Florida.

Go Gators!

May 2024 – iMED student Jakob Hamilton successfully defended his thesis “High Carbon Steel Repair Through Directed Energy Deposition and Ancillary Processing Modes“. We are extremely proud of him, and excited to see his future work at Iowa State University.

On October 25th and 26th, 2023, the REMADE Institute held a meeting in Rochester, NY, for its members. During the meeting, Anthony Cardinali and Valeria Marin-Montealegre, second-year Ph.D. students at the iMED Lab, presented a poster on “Development of Hybrid Repair and Nondestructive Evaluation Technologies for Aerospace Components.

Our Ph.D. students have returned to campus after the summer break!

It is essential to acknowledge the remarkable work they have carried out during their summer internships at different companies and universities across the United States. Their knowledge and skills in research and development are contributing to the development of science in their respective focus area.

Learn a little more about our Ph.D. students and their experiences below.

Valeria Marin-Montealegre

Valeria Marin-Montealegre did her internship at the Center for Medical Technology & Innovation (CMTI) in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Rochester, during the summer of 2023.

As part of the CMTI summer clinical rotation program, she had the opportunity to work alongside CMTI students in various operating rooms at Strong Memorial Hospital, including general surgery, cardiac surgery, OB/GYN, ENT, neurosurgery, and orthopedics. Her primary responsibility was to identify the needs of the different medical teams and patients and translate them into potential medical devices.

Likewise, she was conducting workshops on additive manufacturing and digital flow for medical modeling to help clinical students generate personalized medical products.

Maria Camila Ceballos-Santa

Maria Camila Ceballos-Santa was doing her internship at Genentech, founder of the biotechnology industry and member of the Roche Group since 2009.

She was immersed in the scope of product development, with a specific focus on the Clinical Sciences domain. She enriched her understanding of late-stage studies while collaborating with global cross-functional teams on everything necessary to ensure the safety and efficacy of a drug that could be marketed for patients suffering from severe and life-threatening illnesses. Beyond this, she has had the privilege of contributing to projects aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives within the field of research, with the vision of improving outcomes in different demographic populations.

Among her responsibilities were:
– Assist in the review of critical documents related to late-stage clinical trials.
– Assist with data review of late-stage clinical trials.
– Develop/provide input for clinical presentations.
– Participate in global cross-functional team discussions on medication safety and efficacy.
– Assist with strategic project initiatives that evaluate various areas of clinical trial development to improve diversity and inclusion and report findings.

On May 19, 2023, the iMED laboratory team participated in the IISE Annual Conference and Exposition held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Below, you can find who presented and some photos of this great conference!

Valeria Marin Montealegre was presenting her work on:

Digital Light Processing (DLP) Bioprinting Strategy to Produce Biocompatible Ultraviolet Light-Based Constructs

Anthony Cardinali was presenting his work on:

“Shlieren Imaging”

Finally, some photos of our iMED team members enjoying the different corners of New Orleans.

May 2022  iMED is extremely proud of our freshly minted Dr. Srikanthan Ramesh. On April 22, 2022 Sri defended his dissertation. On May 6th he walked the stage for his hooding ceremony. We are extremely proud of him!

Sri, we wish you all the best in your new tenure-track faculty position at Oklahoma State University!

January 10, 2022  iMED welcomes Ms. Valeria Marin-Montealegre into the team as a new PhD student. She completed her bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering at Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, Colombia. She completed a Master’s degree in Product Development Engineering at her Alma Mater. Ms. Marin-Montealegre will be working on the bio-manufacturing side of the team.

We wish her all the best as she begins this incredible journey!

December 17, 2021 – Ms. Emily Lazaurs published a paper, titled Sulfated Hydrogels in Intervertebral Disc and Cartilage Research in the journal Cells. This is an outstanding achievement as it is her first first author paper in a Journal with a 6.6 Impact Factor (IF).
