Professional Background

Dr. Tocco (or simply “VJ”) discovered his love and affinity for teaching as an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan while navigating the challenges associated with studying Chemical Engineering. In addition to the satisfaction of helping someone else understand difficult concepts, he experienced that teaching is one of the best ways to learn!

Since becoming an Instructional Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering in 2018, VJ has taught multiple courses, including “Material and Energy Balances”, “Separation and Mass Transfer Operations”, “Chemical Process Safety” and “Phase and Chemical Equilibria” (For a full list and syllabi, click here). He also coordinates ABET accreditation for the ChE Department and serves on the department’s Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.

Personal Life

VJ’s family includes his wife, Terra, and two standard poodles, Puddles and Wally. His hobbies include stand-up paddleboarding and swimming in Florida’s gorgeous springs in the summer, and mountain-biking Florida’s bike trails in the winter. He loves to play golf year-round, recently trimming his handicap to single-digits! He is among the most dedicated fans of University of Michigan athletics, despite the usual heartbreak that the football team provides each November.
