In the industrial operation of municipal waste incinerators for electricity generation, the mining of phosphorus for fertilizer, or the demolition of aging infrastructure, we generate \u201cwaste\u201d materials that are often stockpiled or landfilled. However, these materials, like those we traditionally think of in \u201crecycling\u201d, have the potential to be repurposed in beneficial use applications. In partnership with organizations across the state, the Sustainable Materials Management Research Laboratory has researched and developed environmentally and structurally safe applications for waste incineration ash or phosphogypsum in sustainable construction, such as use as aggregate in road base.
