Biography:

Mary Ifeoma Nwanua is a Ph.D. student and a graduate research assistant in the Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida. Her research is conducted at the Simmons Research Lab, which focuses on fostering the professional development of engineers, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented populations in academia and the workforce.

As an international student with African roots, Mary is dedicated to increasing the presence of foreign-born talents in the US STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) industry. Her current research interest revolves around improving the engineering workforce by enhancing the agency of engineering students through their professional formation. This approach aims to boost students’ resilience, sense of belonging, and active participation in the engineering workforce and academics.

Through her work, Mary aspires to create a work environment in science and engineering that accommodates and supports individuals from underrepresented populations.
