Lab News from April 2019 to July 2020

  • July 2020: Shirin Noei successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation! Congratulations!! Dr. Noei will be joining Tennessee Tech University as a Research Assistant Professor in August 2020.
  • July 2020: Dr. Xilei Zhao presented “Applying machine learning to investigate human behavior in disasters” in the 2020 Natural Hazards Center Researchers Meeting.
  • July 2020: Ningzhe Xu presented “Assessing household evacuation decision-making in Hurricane Irma” in the 45th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop.
  • June 2020: Dr. Xilei Zhao co-presented “Autonomous vehicles and micromobility in a disruptive society and transportation system” with Drs. Lily Elefteriadou and Lili Du in the 5th Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility.

  • March 2020: Our lab’s research product, “Using Artificial Intelligence for safe and effective wildfire evacuations,” got accepted for publication in Fire Technology.
  • February 2020: Our lab’s paper, “Modelling and interpreting pre-evacuation decision-making using machine learning,” got accepted for publication in Automation in Construction.
  • February 2020: Shirin passed her Ph.D. candidacy exam. Big congrats!
  • February 2020: Dr. Xilei Zhao presented “The need for transportation resilience in the era of climate change” in the 10th Annual WTS Symposium.
  • February 2020: Our lab’s paper, “Prediction and behavioral analysis of travel mode choice: A comparison of machine learning and logit models,” got accepted for publication in Travel Behaviour and Society.
  • February 2020: Our lab’s paper, “Using machine learning for direct demand modeling of ridesourcing services in Chicago,” got accepted for publication in Journal of Transport Geography.
  • January 2020: Our lab members made seven presentations in TRB 2020! 
  • December 2019: Dr. Xilei Zhao (PI) won a Natural Hazards Center Project, titled “Modeling of evacuation behavior in the 2019 Kincade Fire, Sonoma County, California,” with E. Kuligowski (Senior Personnel), R. Lovreglio (Senior Personnel), and D. Nilsson (Senior Personnel).
  • December 2019: Dr. Xilei Zhao (PI) won a Florida Sea Grant Project, titled “Community-driven evacuation planning and scheduling,” with R. Liu (co-PI).
  • November 2019: Dr. Xilei Zhao was appointed as an affiliated faculty of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at UF.
  • November 2019: Dr. Xilei Zhao (co-PI) won a FIBER FRC Project, titled “An IoT-enabled critical infrastructure information network for a future resilient city,” with R. Liu (PI) and X. Yu (co-PI).
  • November 2019: Dr. Xilei Zhao (PI) won a USDOT STRIDE Project, titled “Micromobility as a solution to reduce urban traffic congestion,” with V. Sisiopiku (co-PI) and R. Steiner (co-PI).
