Tor earned a bachelor&#8217;s in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 2024. Tor brings a strong hands-on background from the trades. As a fabricator and steelworker, he contributed to projects ranging from custom vehicles to heavy-duty equipment platforms. Additionally, he has structural experience with framing and concrete. Rei earned a bachelor&#8217;s in mechanical engineering from Florida Atlantic University in 2020. While at FAU he was advised by Dr. Hassan Mahfuz where he developed carbon nanotube impregnated Kevlar fabric to increase spike pierce resistance for flexible armor. Under the direction of Dr. John Martin, Rei then pursued a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at the University of Cincinnati, developing stimuli-responsive polymers to advance the functionality of synthetic materials for tissue engineering. This work led to the creation of ROS-degradable bone tissue substitutes and a first-of-its-kind 3D-printable resin. This work, a collaboration between iMED Laboratory and AMPrint Center at RIT, sought to unveil challenges with 3D printing stainless steel on non-planar surfaces. Components were fabricated using a state-of-the-art hybrid manufacturing machine in the Brinkman Machine Tools and Manufacturing Laboratory, and applied laser power and scanning speed were found to directly influence metal characteristics. During the meeting,\u00a0Anthony Cardinali\u00a0and\u00a0Valeria Marin-Montealegre, second-year Ph.D. students at the iMED Lab, presented a poster on \u201cDevelopment of Hybrid Repair and Nondestructive Evaluation Technologies for Aerospace Components.\u201c<\/li>\n  \n    <li><strong>December 2, 2023:<\/strong> Our\u00a0Ph.D. students\u00a0have returned to campus after the summer break!\nIt is essential to\u00a0acknowledge\u00a0the remarkable work they have carried out during their\u00a0summer internships\u00a0at different companies and universities across the United States.\u00a0Their knowledge and skills in research and development are contributing to the development of science in their respective focus area. Valeria Marin-Montealegre\u00a0did her internship\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Center for Medical Technology &amp; Innovation (CMTI)\u00a0in the Department of Biomedical Engineering,\u00a0University of Rochester, during the summer of 2023. As part of the CMTI summer clinical rotation program, she had the opportunity to work alongside CMTI students in various operating rooms at\u00a0Strong Memorial Hospital, including\u00a0general surgery, cardiac surgery, OB\/GYN, ENT, neurosurgery, and\u00a0orthopedics. Her primary responsibility was to\u00a0identify the needs of the different medical teams and patients and translate them into\u00a0potential medical devices. Likewise, she was conducting workshops\u00a0on\u00a0additive manufacturing\u00a0and digital flow for\u00a0medical modeling\u00a0to help clinical students generate\u00a0personalized\u00a0medical products. \nMaria Camila Ceballos-Santa\u00a0was doing her internship at\u00a0Genentech, founder of the biotechnology industry and member of the\u00a0Roche Group\u00a0since 2009. She was immersed in the scope of\u00a0product development, with a specific focus on the\u00a0Clinical Sciences\u00a0domain. She enriched her understanding of\u00a0late-stage studies\u00a0while collaborating with global cross-functional teams on everything necessary to ensure the safety and efficacy of a drug that could be marketed for patients suffering from\u00a0severe and life-threatening illnesses. Beyond this, she has had the privilege of contributing to projects aimed at\u00a0promoting diversity\u00a0and\u00a0inclusion\u00a0initiatives within the field of research, with the vision of improving outcomes in different\u00a0demographic populations.
