Admissions Tips

Best Practices for Applying to HCC@UF PhD Program

  • Identify Faculty You Want to Work With
    • Explicitly name the faculty members whose research aligns with your interests.
    • Mention them in your Personal Statement
  • Get Strong Letters of Recommendation (from Faculty, Not Graduate Students)
    • Letters carry more weight when written by faculty or senior researchers.
    • Avoid letters written primarily by graduate students (even if they supervised you)
  • Follow Directions Exactly
    • Double-check all application requirements (GRE, TOEFL/IELTS if applicable, writing samples, transcripts).
    • Small mistakes (like missing deadlines or uploading the wrong document) can derail your application.
  • Polish Everything
    • Have multiple people review your Personal Statement and Application Materials.
